Why people visit your website and never contact you

Most of your visitors leave without a trace, so the loss never appears in any report. Here is what they were stuck on.

Updated

The overwhelming majority of people who visit your website do nothing and leave. That is normal, it is true of every business, and the number is high enough that most owners do not want to look at it.

What makes it hard to act on is that it is silent. A missed call is a fact. A person who read your services page for ninety seconds, hesitated, and closed the tab is not recorded anywhere as a loss. It surfaces only as a general sense that the site should be producing more, which is impossible to act on because it does not say what was wrong.

The four reasons, roughly in order

Almost every silent exit is one of these, and the useful thing is that they need different fixes. Treating them as one problem called "conversion" is why generic advice does not help.

They had a question and there was nothing to ask

Do you cover my area, do you do this specific thing, how soon. If the page does not say and there is no way to ask, the cheapest next move is the back button. This is the largest single group and it is covered in the guide to website chat.

They could not tell what it costs

Not a precise number, just whether you are in their universe. Absent that, a meaningful share leave rather than risk an awkward conversation. There is a middle path between hiding and publishing a price list in the pricing guide.

They were interested but not ready

Researching, comparing, planning something for next spring. Nothing is wrong; they are simply not going to call today. Almost every site treats this person as a failure and offers them nothing, which is the actual mistake.

The only next step was a phone call

A growing share of people will not phone a business they have not used, at all, under any circumstances. This is not laziness and it does not respond to a bigger phone number in the header.

The one that is worth the most

The third group is the biggest opportunity because they are the least contested. Nobody else is competing for the person who is nine months from acting. Being the business they remember costs almost nothing and pays for a long time.

A second way to make contact

The fourth reason has the simplest fix and it is the one most sites get half right. A contact form exists, it asks for name, email, phone and a free-text message, and it converts badly because a blank box is work and nobody knows what to write in it.

Multi-Step Contact Form

$250 setup, then $50 a month

Breaking it into a few specific questions asked one at a time converts better than one long form for a reason that has nothing to do with design: each answer is easy, and having answered two the person is more likely to finish. It also means what reaches you is structured rather than a sentence saying please call me.

The offer on the way out

This is the piece with a bad reputation, mostly deserved. Almost everyone has met the version that fires two seconds after you land, covers the page, and offers a discount on something you have not decided you want.

Three rules separate the version that works from the version that makes people hate your site, and they are not subtle.

  • It fires when they are leaving, not when they arrive. Someone who has read two pages and is heading for the tab bar has shown interest. Someone who just landed has shown nothing.
  • It offers something genuinely useful to a person who is not ready. A relevant guide, a checklist, a price range for the work they were reading about. Not a discount, which only speaks to someone already deciding.
  • It appears once and takes no for an answer. Showing it again on the next page is the behaviour that gives the whole category its reputation.

What to offer the not-ready visitor

Lead Magnet + Opt-in

Trade a valuable resource for their email - grow your list every day

Instant. Live when you hit Publish

The test for whether the thing you are offering is worth an email address is whether a stranger could get the same value elsewhere in thirty seconds. A generic buyer guide fails that test. A price band for this specific job in this specific area, or a checklist of what to ask any company in your trade before hiring them, passes it, because you are the only one who can write it.

What to do first

  1. 01Open your own site on a phone and try to become a customer. Time it. Most owners discover something in the first thirty seconds that they had stopped seeing.
  2. 02Fix the question problem before the exit problem. A way to ask something is worth more than a way to capture someone who left because they could not.
  3. 03Then add the exit offer, and only for the not-ready group. If you can only do one thing well, make it that one, because nobody else is competing for those people.

Should you put an AI chat on your website

Most website chat is worse than nothing. The difference between the two versions is smaller and more specific than the sales pages suggest.

Should you put prices on your website

Both the usual answers are wrong. There is a middle option that keeps the qualifying without the silence.

The customers you already have are the cheapest work you will ever win

Customers almost never leave deliberately. They drift, and nothing in the business notices until the month looks thin.
