How it actually works
A customer brings a car in for an oil change and comes back a month later saying the shop wrecked the engine, and the honest answer to did anyone write down what it looked like is usually no. Now the person at intake photographs the car and the dash, and the photos become a timestamped record: odometer as displayed, plate, and what is visibly marked or worn, described plainly by location. When the dispute comes, you are reading your own dated record instead of remembering.
